Felt like a change by Domnics Felt like a change by Domnics
So I seriously love the beast's new look. Very happy with how Emma looks as Belle in her peasant gown (It's so Belle!) but a little disappointed with how the ballgown looks especially compared to last year's Cinderella. Still beautiful though!

I've grown more accustomed to it now, but I still feel that compared to last year's Cinderella and especially the animated dress, the ballgown is underwhelming.
I do think it suits the character's personality in this movie more as well as being more sensible in terms of action.

I remember looking at what they changed with the beast's new look.  At first, I thought they'd gotten his design wrong, but closer inspection shows that this is actually similar to what the cartoon version might have looked like, if he had been real.  Granted, he's a little bit thinner, stands more upright, has a skinnier tail, and his horns face backwards, but he's DEFINITELY very much like the original.  I heard Dan Stevens did an incredible job playing him :D.

Yeah, Belle's golden ballgown is beautiful, but it's kinda boring compared to the one she wore in the cartoon.  This one actually wouldn't have been so boring if she had worn gloves and had a poofier skirt, but we can't be picky with these films.

I'm a bit iffy on the Beast's face design. I thought the point was to make him look monstrous than manly, but have a heart of gold. Here, he has a humanistic face, which kind of makes him look more handsome and charming than monstrous. He looks more handsome-ish than beastly.

I did notice his design was more humanistic while drawing him (I was trying to follow the reference close as I could lol), particularly the nose. I thought it would be more animal-like. I actually kind of like it though. I love that his face is just hairy and it extends all the way to a beard.

But doesn't that kinda remove a bit of the monstrous element? I thought the point of Beauty and the Beast was to never judge a book by its cover, and find humanity in a great big monster, not actually SEE the humanity peeking out. That just makes the Beast more handsome and less monstrous.

That's true.
I think it might've been a thing where they didn't want to lose Dan Stevens in the beast-effects (although personally I don't see Dan Stevens anywhere in there. That could be anyone for all I know lmao), or they wanted to keep the humanity in there because we'd relate more to that and it wouldn't distract as much as a completely beastly creature. They did something similar with Angelina Jolie in Maleficent where she wasn't made up all green with completely yellow contacts because she had to stay human enough so the effects wouldn't detract from the performance. And for Dan, he would've really had to pull out something totally jaw-dropping if he had to work against those special effects on his character.

I feel like we're still not seeing something with the character though. There was an image of Beast looking more human but with horns... so I'm not sure what that was about. I get where you're coming from though. Let's see what they have in store for us - the trailer's coming up this Monday. :)

Yeah. It's a shame that they keep pulling us in with "good looks" rather than sticking to the "never judge a book by its cover" theme. We don't need to see the celebrities or actors; we wanna see the characters and their personalities.

Well then, I guess we shall see...

That's the beast's design in the live-action version?

Edit

Oh, found the picture you were drawing from.  Yup, that's the beast's live action design.  I'm a bit disappointed.  I mean, aside from the legs, he's basically just a hairy man with horns.  They could have at least done some additional make-up to his nose to make his face seem less human.

As for the dresses . . . yeah, totally see your point.  Her peasant dress is an amazing translation, her princess dress, not so much.

I agree about the peasant dress. I look at it and my head just immediately registers that it's Belle and I love that. It's definitely got all the basics of her look down: brown hair, blue gown, white apron, but just kicked up a notch for a live action look. Definitely love the red stitches and the homemade look to it. Very cool! x)

maybe they did not want Emma's dress and Lily James' dresses to look TOO alike with the colours as the only difference?

That's what I was wondering actually!
Before the photos were released, it seemed like Lily James' ballgown actually looked a lot like the animated dress Belle wore, so it seemed they had to make it different somehow. I like what they went with, but I'm just a little underwhelmed is all. I'm sure it's going to look stunning in footage.

Oh very interesting ;)
I did hear descriptions from people who saw footage of the film way back that Emma was wearing gloves and had makeup on so who knows!
